Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport is located in Bao'an District, Shenzhen City, on the east bank of the Pearl River. Its geographical coordinates are 113°49' east longitude and 22°36' north latitude. It is 32 kilometers away from the urban area of Shenzhen. It is a 4F-class civil transportation airport and is one of the top 100 airports in the world, an international hub airport, one of the twelve major trunk airports in China, one of the four major air cargo centers in China, and one of the major parcel distribution centers in China. 

Shenzhen Airport officially opened for operation in October 1991. On September 18, 2001, Shenzhen Huangtian International Airport was officially renamed Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport. On June 15, 2006, the expansion project of the flight area received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission. On July 26, 2011, the second runway of Shenzhen Airport was officially put into use. 

According to the information on the airport's official website in August 2017, the airport has a total area of 7.7 million square meters for the flight zone, 451,000 square meters for the terminal building, and 1.66 million square meters for the airport warehouses. The new terminal building covers an area of 195,000 square meters and has 199 parking aprons (including 62 bridge positions). There are 2 runways in total, with the second runway being 3,800 meters long and 60 meters wide. The total number of flight routes is 188, including 154 domestic routes, 4 routes to Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions, and 30 international routes. The airport serves 139 cities, including 108 domestic cities, 4 cities in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and 27 international cities. 

In 2003, the annual passenger throughput of the airport exceeded 10 million for the first time. In 2015, the airport's cargo and mail throughput exceeded 1 million tons for the first time. In 2018, Shenzhen Airport received and dispatched 49.349 million passengers, an increase of 8.2% year-on-year, with a cargo and mail throughput of 121.9万吨 and 356，000 take-offs and landings. 

In May 2018, Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport was awarded the title of 'One of the World's Top Ten Beautiful Airports'.
