The University Town of Shenzhen is located in the northeastern part of Nanshan District, Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province (in the Xili-Tanglang area). It is adjacent to Shenzhen Wildlife Park and is about 10 kilometers away from Shenzhen High-tech Industrial Zone. The overall planned construction area is 10 square kilometers. The first phase of the development covers 3.8 square kilometers and is divided into two campuses, the east and the west. The University Town began construction in 2002 and completed the construction of teaching infrastructure in September 2003. As of June 1, 2012, a total of 400,000 square meters of teaching and research buildings, 66,000 square meters of student dormitories, and 46,000 square meters of libraries have been built. 

Shenzhen University Town is the only one in China that has been approved by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. It is jointly established by the local government and renowned universities, mainly aiming to cultivate full-time graduate students. The university town was initiated in August 2000. The establishment of the university town aims to achieve a leapfrog development of higher education in Shenzhen, enhance Shenzhen's ability and potential for independent innovation, improve the economic quality, population quality and cultural level, and promote Shenzhen to basically achieve modernization first. By 2012, Shenzhen University Town has achieved remarkable results and has gradually become four platforms for high-level talent cultivation and aggregation, high-level scientific research, high-tech information and high-level international exchanges in Shenzhen.
